Five essential fics: The Sentinel

Nov 12, 2010 23:00

I may be doing a series of these--just thinking about fandoms that I'm not as involved in anymore, and seeing which 5 fics I think of first, the ones that stuck with me. It's basically a chance to remind myself what I've loved in my earlier fandoms, to find out whether the fics are still online, and to share them with you ( Read more... )

She wrote some great stuff! And one of the first Numb3rs fics I read, a crossover with Medium.

D.L. Witherspoon. 'Nough said.

K. Ryn. 'Nough said.

I seem to remember really enjoying "The Circularity of Donuts" and it's companion piece.

Sadly, Brook Hensen's stuff is no longer on line.

Besterette wrote some of my favorite shorts.

I also seem to remember liking a lot of Red Soprano's stuff.

And I still think about Martha's stories--Plank, Snake Oil, and Unsleeping. It's funny, because I think of those stories, and I'm like, "Ooh, I wish someone would right a SPN version of these." Then I think, "Wait. SPN is these. Duh."

I've been meaning to get out my S1 DVDs and start watching them, see if I'm still as enamored of the show as I was, see if it stands the test of time, and see if I still relate to the same character I did. Heh.

Seriously, DLW probably ended up being my favorite author in that fandom. There were other good ones, including many you mention here (Besterette was my go-to humor gal for a long time; K. Ryn--cases and angst and mysticism, 'nough said). Didn't Merry Lynne write "The Infinite Circularity of Donuts," and wasn't the companion piece the toothbrush one? Yeah, those were good. :)

Re: Martha's stories: I'm not sure I'd ever be able to reread Plank. It kind of freaked me out, the emotional intensity of what happens to Blair. I was just thinking the other day, though, that I need to re-read Snake Oil, and maybe finally try to get through Unsleeping, now that I'm more familiar with horror as a genre. (thank you SPN)

I've, oddly, found myself wanting to write about Jim and Blair again, lately. Hmmm. I need to get my hands on some decent DVD copies of seasons 2-4, since my VHS copies no longer play.

Plank was good for the intensity. I've re-read the highlights many times.

Snake Oil is a good stand-alone horror, and I think the first place I heard about the balloon-headed Japanese monster.

Unsleeping . . . Well . . . That one well and truly freaked me out. Big time. I've never been able to re-read it in its entirety. I only went back to re-read the rescue parts. And you know I'm not overly adverse to horror. I'd be interested to know what you think of it.
