Well said indeed. I've wondered this myself. Not to knock thoughtful AUs that extrapolate new ideas from specific launching points in canon, but I do sometimes wonder why some writers identify themselves as part of a given universe when they wish to jettison everything within it. Very thought-provoking stuff.

Exactly! I can sort of get why they might want to "play with" a specific idea but put their own twist on it (the Sentinel and Guide relationship in The Sentinel, for example), but it's the identification with the thing they dislike enough to destroy that I just. Don't. Get.
