I've tried it.  My fiancé plays it fairly regularly.  I'd say that there are some things it doesn't do quite as well as WoW, others that it does somewhat better.

I contemplated trying it out but refrained. I have a policy that says I should limit myself to only one MMO at a time to avoid getting too sucked in. WoW is a life killer in its own right. :(

I do have friends who played D&D Online who were mostly pleased by it.

I play it pretty casually. Farmed Turbine points by doing a quest on several serverse, and bought the drow race. I play a drow monk and usually stick to soloing dungeons or grabbing a cleric hireling if I'm doing poorly.
