True to You, In My Fashion

But I'm always true to you, darlin', in my fashion,
Yes, I'm always true to you, darlin', in my way.
-Cole Porter, 'Always True to You in My Fashion' from "Kiss Me Kate"

She knows what she sees.

At night, when he thinks everyone else is asleep, she knows that she sees him crawl behind the bushes and out of sight, out of smell of the camp. She knows that his distraction, his necessity makes him careless and he never hears her settle into her vantage point.

She knows that she can be far quieter than he would ever suspect.

She knows that he can hardly wait until he is out of sight, until he is safely downwind before his hands disappear into the folds of his robes. She knows that more of the tears in his material come from his frantic haste to disrobe than from any of the monsters that they fight.

She knows how his face turns flushed, his eyes close in almost-pain, how his hands shake and shake until they start their movements. She knows each of his stifled moans, of his jerky movements as he sprawls in the dirt, of the ways he rubs against the logs or ground in complete abandon, of the quiet words no religious man should ever use that are shaken loose with every jerk of his hips. And she knows that final surrender, knows the moment his eyes snap open, expression as clear and clean as daylight will never show-

She knows the name he calls.

She knows the moments he lies there panting, covered in dirt and sweat and-

And-

She knows how even in his sated moments, heavy-lidded and boneless, he still runs the beads over his chest and down.

Because his hedonism should never/can never be satisfied by his faith. Because, despite his groping and comments and wandering eyes, she has never seen another's hands follow the path of his beads. Because the second time he cries out, the name is the same, even if the tone is broken, defeated.

Because she sees him remove his glove, the beads for that brief second, sees the expanding hole. Because she knows one day that he will not replace the glove.

Because she knows the name he will call in that last agony of satiation and pain.

She knows he has bent his vows so far that the reed of their intent has swept the ground. She knows that, in the loosest sense of his faith, things are only 'well done' or 'poorly done'. She knows that he has done grey and grey and grey, but he has not yet broken his true words.

She knows that he can not truly lie with woman without snapping the reed. She knows that there will be no heirs, even with defeat.

She hears him call out once again, 'Namu amida butsu.'

She knows that this name must always come first. That, in his own fashion, he is true.

She knows he will never betray this name with the exterminator. Because she sees that moment of devotion, of clarity at release that even his strongest urgesfailingscynicismfear can't erase.

She knows what she sees.

Heart heavy, tails flicking, she returns to her mistress to wait out the tragedy.

The End

End Notes:

Namu amida butsu: "Homage to Amida Buddha"

This particular phrase is important to the Japanese Buddhist lineage Jodo or Pure Land. This lineage prescribes loving devotion to the Buddha Amida as means of being reborn in the Pure Land, or the paradise over which he presides. Pure Land prayer centers on the repetition of the aforementioned phrase Namu amida butsu and actually became one of the most popular forms of Buddhism in Japan.

Although it is highly unlikely Miroku belonged to this particular sect, many sects of Japanese Buddhism did forbid monks from lying with women. That this had never stopped his father or Mushin, always made me wonder if Miroku actually did try not to break his vows since we never see him actually acting on any of his flirtations and he stretches while not completely breaking the rules of property acquisition. True, in his fashion. Yeah. It's a stretch.
