Wounded Trust
Quiet reigned. Kaede warmed her hands on a mug of tea. Exhausted, Kagome slept, accompanied by an equally tired Shippo. Behind them, Inuyasha sat, brooding.
The elderly miko considered him. After all this time, she knew him well. Tonight, his brooding ... he was-shaken. Scared?
“Inuyasha?”
He looked up, his eyes momentarily flashing green. “Would you like to talk?”
Without words, he accepted her offer, moving to her side. Knowing he would speak when he was ready, Kaede brewed a second cup from the remaining hot water, then contemplated her own tea.
He sighed, finally, bunching his shoulders as if to relieve a cramp, and then threw back half of the tea. “Ever since I was a little kid,” he said, staring at the fire, “I’m used to youkai hating me, wanting to send me to an early grave. Used to think all humans did the same. But, it’s...I...I thought the village ... accepted me ... I mean, not everybody liked me, I knew that, but no one was trying to get rid of me. I thought. So, why ... why was the boy wanting to kill me? I don’t understand!”
She’d been wrong-he was more simply scared. For over three years, under her influence, and that of his two closest friends, Inuyasha had begun to trust those outside his tiny group, begun to trust the villagers.
He was in pain; his still-young and fragile ability deeply wounded. Kaede ached, and sought not to weep.
How to help him?
