Summary: The Kami had sent him to cleanse the land, to burn the perversion and sin from the countryside... but for that, he needed her…
Moving through the forest, he searched, endlessly, tirelessly. Her scent teased him, evaded him. She smelled of lightning and rain and of purity unmatched by any.
Humans had bred that scent out of its bloodline centuries ago, perversion and greed prevailing once the innocence of youth was purged from the blood of each new generation.
Humanity had become a stain on the land, a mottled array of one ruined lineage after another. Few human villages even cherished the gift of their children anymore.
They didn't play favorites; they treated their baby's no better than livestock, worse even, further ruining any chance for purity and innocence to develop beyond the first few years of their tortured existences.
So the Kami had sent him to cleanse the land, to burn the perversion and sin from the countryside, then to purify whoever was strong enough to survive it. Those remaining would start over again.
But for that, he needed her…
Her scent pulled at him, taunted him… fascinated him. He could taste the electric pulse of her femininity, even as her scent vanished unnaturally.
There was some sort of magical interference that washed the evidence of her existence from the air, leaving nothing more than a faint trace of magic that even the best of his kind wouldn't find.
But he wasn't deterred… No, he would continue chasing the storm that circled him, evaded him, because he knew that lightning never struck twice in the same place, and that rain always traveled downhill.
