I guess to an extent it may also depend on what you mean when you say "become a leader". What constitutes a successful leader? The judgment of your followers? Or how history & your non-followers perceive you?
The Pope leads a great many people, as did Hitler. But in terms of "leadership", people will oft say that Hitler did a better job of motivating his followers. But he isn't exactly the chap you'd follow now, would you ?
