HEAT

Peaceful silence. The cool night air a welcoming relief from the heat that had assaulted them all day. The festival had been long and tiring but finally her duties were finished. The day had been filled with cooking and entertaining the village's children. Also, as reigning miko she had participated in grueling ceremonies honoring the kami that protected the areas residence and provided fruitful crops that would see the village through the winter. Harvest had proceeded quickly after the banishing of the jewel. Inuyasha, Miroku, Sango and herself had all lent a hand in aiding the farmers in the fall work. Today was a celebration for all. An ending to a summer and above all the ending to a quest. Finally she could spend the evening with the one person she had daydreamed about all day.

The rustling in the trees behind her was the only indication of his presence. Hot breath caressed her neck sending chills down her spine and birthing goosebumps on her flesh. Strong hands kneaded away the stress that had knotted in her shoulders. Closing her eyes she leaned into the frame that crept up behind her.

“You done yet?” His deep voice rumbled in her ear sending a rush of excitement through her.

“Mmm hmm.” She mumbled enjoying the massage. One hand stilled and pulled away. Her eyes snapped open wanting to cry out at its absence. Shocking heat burnt her hip when the missing appendage settled on her side.

It was so different now. The affection he showed her on rare occasions when they were completely alone. The raw affection that mirrored her own shining brightly in his amber eyes. She was startled from her thoughts when he roughly pulled her around to face him. Hunger burned in his eyes, sparkling in the moonlight. Her hands came up to grip the fabric of his fire rat. Blue orbs danced in anticipation; reflecting in the amber ones that bore so intimately into hers.

Her mind lost all comprehension as his lips inched closer. Heat fiercer than the summer sun enveloped them as their lips touched for the first time. Both were oblivious to the noise from the fireworks that exploded in the night sky, drowned out by the beating of their own hearts.
