I figure determination is one thing young Kaede would have had, to get to the point where we 'met' her in the manga.

What's interesting is that I only realized the commonality that Kaede has with my OC Hajime, when I wrote this piece! We'll see if that realization goes anywhere... ;)

They should have actually shown an episode about Kaede and her life without her sister. I loved your portrayal of her in this piece - as the girl who is not naturally gifted and moreover the victim of fate, and yet trying to piece it all together and overcome the adversity. It's quite surprising that present day Kaede has absolutely no bitterness towards life. Excellent drabblle, great job!

If they covered everything, they'd never get to the end. ;) And we'd have less room to play.

The Kaede of the story is one of the more intriguing minor characters. (And for me, she's easy to identify with ... unbeautiful, single...) And how did she get from being a maimed little girl who watched her sister die, to the assured, sometimes acerbic provider of stew and advice?

The 'With One Eye' serial is essentially my answer to the question. I hope you'll keep reading.

Very nice. You've really captured Kaede's determination and willingness to do whatever it takes to prove she can be as good as Kikyou. Those are some big shoes to fill, especially when you consider how high a pedestal younger siblings put their older brothers/sisters on when they idolize them. Great job.

Just curious when you think Kaede lost her sight. The anime says Kikyou did it, but the first chapter of the manga shows Kaede with her eye covered by a piece of cloth implying that she was injured in IY's destruction of the village.
