Balcony garden - it's alive!

Jul 06, 2011 09:08

As I've said before I had pretty much decided to forgo the garden this year due to lack of money - then when money wasn't as much of a problem, lack of time - but my blank, empty, boring balcony kept mocking me and I gave in. I'm so glad! A few fresh veggies and herbs to nosh and some pretty flowers to brighten the view make all the difference. It' ( Read more... )

I'm pretending I have a balcony and planted a gazillion tomato seeds this spring, and the plants have completely taken over my windows, I think they're mutants or something. Ate my first ripe tomato yesterday. Growing stuffs ftw!
Cat is very cute, I can see him enjoying his summer, comfy chair and bird movie. :)

It really sucks that the girl with the apartment backed out at practically the last minute. But you must be doing something right because tomatoes don't generally like to set on fruit indoors. Congratulations!

And yes, Phouka has become a total balcony lounger since he has a throne from which to survey his kingdom.

Have another apartment thing going right now, actually. A little steep rent-wise, but with an amaazing view from the balcony. :))) We sent in papers for the switch, now we're waiting to hear if we get a yes from the powers that be...
This girl is not Swedish, to be a hater. This deal of trying to exchange flats with someone, I've only had problems with Swedes. It's like we're spoiled and always think we can do better. This girl is from Croatia, she's been so pleasant and stand-up. :)

I did not know that about tomatos! Maybe it's because the window has been open all summer.
Please pet Phouka from me.

Looks very nice! Wish I could have a hummingbird feeder, but every year it's the same, the bees swarm around it.

Thanks! I guess I'm pretty lucky with the 'no bees' situation. I usually have a few wasps (which are strangely absent since mid spring) and the fuzzy bumble-bees that are big enough to pet that drone in the stairwells but rarely venture onto my balcony.

Thanks! I'm so happy I gave in and allowed life to blossom on my otherwise barren balcony. It's actually so peaceful to look out on.

The garden looks perfect! And that bush cucumber plant is darling! Talk about future yummies.

Whenever the grackles show up, and those birds amuse me on one level, they drive away the other birds. So I understand the annoyingness that they are for a feeder. May they get the message!

Phouka in his planter, he's a fuzzy flower! Who nibbles as he lazes, hee!

Hummingbirds..I saw one in the city the other day! The sun was in my eyes so it was impossible to tell which kind. I then thought of you and your hummingbirds.

This late night answer brought to you by an inexplicable wake up at 3am. Reading over what I've missed on LJ is soothing to this insomniac.

That cucumber bush has just about doubled in size since I took that pic about a week ago! I had the first cuke last night. I went to a friends for dinner and took it for the salad. It was so sweet and crisp! I'm going to be picking them young (about 6" or so and only about an inch or so around) and there's another one nearly ready.

Phouka is definitely my fuzzy flower. He doesn't like me right now because I've put a cover on his pot for a couple of days in an attempt to grow a little something in the center. He'll live.

And if you saw a hummer, unless it's a lost stray (which I understand has been known to happen) it's a Ruby-Throated Hummingbird because those are the only kind we have east of the Rockies. The Rockies are chock full of beautiful varieties. I passed a house one time and saw maybe 10-15 hummers clustered around 3-4 feeders. it was enchanting! Even from a distance.

Thanks! It makes me cheerful and peaceful to look at it. I think it helps me anchor my Zen a little.
