I overall enjoyed the series but was underwhelmed by the final issue. I certainly enjoy when there are subplots available for further work, but if the main plot doesn't satisfactorily end, the entire work suffers.

You are correct to your NextWave reference. I happened to reread the two trade paperbacks this weekend and have much love for that series.

It has been hinted that Peter David will address the other duplicate in the future in upcoming X-Factor tales.

The art style for the final issue was cluttered and unclear as to the action for me. I couldn't identify by sight the character X-23 killed, but I have not gone back and reread the series yet.
