The point of Infinite Crisis was (at least in part) to reboot main DC universe continuity and both clean it up a bit and just do some tweaks on it. Twenty years earlier, Crisis on Infinite Earths had been the first deliberate attempt to clean up continuity, and it did this by eliminating the multiverse in favor of a universe.
While that did simplify things a lot, and many of the post-Crisis reworkings were very successful (i.e., Batman Year One, which was much of the basis for the recent Batman Begins), DC fandom has never really let the multiverse go. Within the last few years DC has tried out concepts like Elseworlds and Hypertime, which allow for alternate realities in some form or another, but I think in the end they figured that if people still want the multiverse 20 years later, maybe it should come back. A lot of folks though Infinite Crisis would bring it back, and it did but apparently only briefly. 52 brings it back permanently, although in this strangely limited form
