Quote of the day (Alan Moore on Watchmen)

"It seems to be that things that were meant satirically or critically
in Watchmen now seem to be simply accepted as kind of what they appear
to be on the surface."
-Alan Moore

The worst thing about the movie version was the complete lack of a sense of humor.

Well, that and the porny sex scene and the exaggerated, teenage-boy hormone fueled violence.

I'm glad I'm not the only non-prude who thought the sex scene was a bit much. On one mailing list I'm on the only person who agreed with me on that was the guy who was so offended by sex and nudity that he was outraged they actually showed Dr. Manhattan below the waist :-P I don't think he and I were really making the same point about the sex part...

And of course, he wasn't bothered by the violence. I was unsurprised but disappointed. Although in one place (Rorschach's punishment of the guy who killed the little girl) the gorier version was far less chilling than what he actually did in the comic. And said less interesting things about the character, for that matter.

Dude, that sex scene offended me, and I sometimes shoot porn for a living. I guess it was how juvenile the whole thing was. She keeps her boots on, the moaning, the pumping. Yeah. I guess it was meant to elicit a response from the sweaty fanboys and i'm sure it worked. Just seemed like more female objectification to me.

And yup, I've had several conversations with people who didn't like the sex but weren't bothered by the violence. Which is crazy, and is scary! speaks a lot about how used to the uber gore and violence we've become, and how numb to it that people don't even question.

I dunno about the sense of humor. At least, I laughed, and winced, quite a lot...
