 Um, looks like I accidentally deleted the meme I had here earlier. Reposting:

Give me any character from a fandom I know, and prompt me a 'first time', and I will write something about it. Example: Hermione/first book she read, Katniss/first song, Toph/first bacon sandwich.

Because, as much as I like Hermione, I find myself curious about these three pre-hogwarts.

Harry reads his first book all by himself in primary school, and it's something about a train or a steamshovel. He doesn't honestly remember, it's been so long. He isn't an early reader or even a gifted reader, but it's something of an escape, and that is something he can appreciate when he spends most of his time shut up in a little closet.

He brings his library books to Mrs. Figg's with him, and sometimes she digs out one or two of her own, with warnings not to tell his aunt and uncle about them. He doesn't, they're about what they hate the most: magic and witches and wizards, but none of them can be found in his library or the book shops.

He doesn't clearly remember what those stories were about, either. It's been a long time since he's needed books as an escape.

Neville falls down the stairs when he's nine years old. A more accurate way of putting it would be that he was shoved down the stairs by an uncle overeager to see magical progress. It leaves him with a broken rib and countless bruises, and his grandmother is forced to make a large beaker of healing brew. While it simmers over the flames, she gives him a book to read while he's waiting in bed, agony making his face bloodless as he bites back cries of pain that would only irritate her.

She chooses it poorly, grabbing it from a stack of books on a nearby shelf: a volume of herbs and their uses. Nevertheless, he pores through it, looking at the waving frond of Fufflegrass and the curling grey vines of Skullroot. Plants are nice, he thinks, they are silent and if you know how to care for them they will never harm you.
