TECHNOLOGY HATES ME

It seems as though my laptop is infested with Malware. It hides my icons and folders, it sends up constant warnings of disc drive failure, and it keeps trying to sell me some upgrade for $80. Also, I installed Norton 360 and it ate that shit like nothing. So, fuck computers. If my super geek mom can't get it working, there's ANOTHER computer I lose ( Read more... )

Fuck Norton, man. In all seriousness though, have you tried software specifically tailored to spyware/malware?

Malwarebytes is good. I also recommend Adaware, which is an well-known name in the field for good reason, and has a free version.

I had my friend walk me through eliminating the thing, restored my computer to an earlier state, and then uploading avast and Norton again. Hopefully it's good now.

Try the free ones, Avast and etc. Have your mom burn them to disc, then install them. How did Norton AV get eaten? Did it prevent installation somehow? Disallow updates? Those are important.

Otherwise, your mom could try weeding it out with processexplorer.exe. She's probably heard of it, it's a very, very fancy task manager, very, very useful.

I used to have (variable) luck with the free AVG malware scans. The only problem is that it's an ever-updating system so if your computer's been stalling out on processing it will only probably make it worse :/

Best of luck though!

Thanks. I uploaded avast on to this after restoring it to an earlier version after eliminating bits of the virus from the system. Everything seems to be working so far!

AVG and Spybot (Spybot is AMAZING for malware search/destroying it).

Spybot sounds like a good one, too. I feel like I should get a lot. T_T

It doesn't slow the computer down and at the end, gives you an option of what to delete.
