though the shopping outside is frightful

Looks like I'm going to have to get used to borrowing this laptop. Too bad my laptop had to die during my gift-buying month. The stores around here like to remind us that Christmas is coming up fast by decorating as soon as it even looks like November's creeping up, playing Christmas songs, launching the Christmas trees, and festooning everything ( Read more... )

It wouldn't be the subject of so many holiday cards, sitcoms, and holiday movies if it weren't true.

Makes me wish there was a movement or something. 'Enough With This Bullshit!' or 'It's Not Christmas, Charlie Brown.'

I am now imagining large cannons set up in store parking lots, firing fully decorated deciduous trees at passing cars. "GET IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT, GODDAMMIT!"

Aw, Nightmare is a good movie! It's a cult classic!

Nonsense, they would NEVER throw deciduous trees at people for Christmas.

They'd be evergreen. Come on, man!

Nightmare is an AMAZING movie, but it succinctly demonstrates why Christmas and Halloween should never be together.

I guess, I can't argue with that...XD.

Did I say deciduous? I meant coniferous...^_^' *fails at being a bio major*

Do you remember the good old days when stores waited until -after- Thanksgiving to start shoving Christmas in our face?

It's not that I have anything against the holiday season, but my lord, do we need to encourage people to be mean and hateful any earlier than necessary? This area hasn't seen "the holiday spirit" in years, the nearest city with anything in it is so packed that if you want anything but the basics for food you have to make a suicide run. =/ I'm very disenchanted.

(also, I have learned I'm more likely to buy someone a big gift for their birthday, because it's like saying "here, let's celebrate the day you came into the world." and you're also not buying for like, 10-20 other people at the same time)

Yes, I remember when the stores had the presence of mind to realize that. Start it any earlier, and we'll be having Christmas in August or July. <8O

Birthday gifts are infinitely more important, yes.

Blah, I always hate how early Christmas things are (particular the Black Friday stuff leaves a sour taste in my mouth), but on the other hand, I love December because of the holiday spirit. I'm always in a good mood then, when everyone's trying to be a little nicer and it's just the first bit of snow!

As or it being so close to Thanksgiving, blame mother nature or water! Thanksgiving is a harvest festival and Christmas is essentially a Christian take on a winter solstice/light coming into the world celebration. To separate them further apart we just need to sacrifice the water keeping things warm from the summer and go into autumn more quickly (maybe that's why Canadian thanksgiving is earlier?) Either way, I looked up seasonal lag and learned something new!

Black Friday is just...the assailment of suckage and commercialism. That is all.

I'm aware of the foundations of the holidays, but wish the ancients could have celebrated summer more. I mean... it's fucking summer. I love summer way more than winter.

We just get out of a giant family eating holiday and launch ourselves into another family eating holiday,

Ugh, I know. This is actually a huge reason why I'm not looking forward to christmas, even though I love presents (both giving and getting).

Why aren't any of our holidays about brisk family hikes?

I have to admit, I love giving and receiving presents, too. That's one good thing about Christmas.

I would be all over Hiking Day. I haven't hiked in ages! And people who live in big cities can just...speedwalk, I guess.
