I am an enormous dweeb, and it's one of those days in which I think of enormously dweeby things instead of doing anything constructive in any way at all. I should be cleaning. My room is thigh-high mess right now, and it needs organizing. Trash needs to be taken out. I am a lazy, dweeby mess and all I can do is surf the net and be a giant nerd. So ( Read more... )

I wouldn't count Rory out just yet. It took Mickey a while before he crossed over from being cowardly boyfriend to being a badass carrying around a massive gun and blowing up Daleks. It may seem unlikely now, but it's possible Rory will crossover to that point as well.

It's not that I necessarily want Rory to be a badass so much as I want him to be a more interesting character. I'd be perfectly fine with him continuing to fail at fighting if he was less...bland.

I think being bland is the point of his characters. He's the voice of reason among the Doctor and Amy, without the freaking out of the Extra Of The Week. Amy is way too cool with traveling with the Doctor, so he fulfills a nice role of being like, "Whoa whoa guys, this is crazy" and then being promptly ignored.

That might be my problem, then. I do enjoy the spastic flaily characters that get lugged along into some adventure they don't actually want to be in, and I do like the occasional sensible input, but Rory mainly comes off as whiny to me. My friend says that it's because his character is so completely normal- not clever, not resourceful, not bold or complicated, just this average joe. There's nothing initially appealing to me, so it's taking me a long time to warm up to him. I haven't watched the recent Silurian episode, though, so he might be getting better.

I don't like the Awesome Girl/Scruffy Loser pairing. I know, it's unfair to Rory to use that term, at least he has a good job unlike the comic book shop guy. I still hate it when they saddle these cool, amazing women to these uninspiring Normal Joe Averages. It could be that Rory doesn't do it for me as a character, too. I am trying to like him, but so far all I can muster is mild tolerance. Bah.

I think the root of the Awesome Girl/Loser pairing springs from the fact that most television writers are male, who likely WEREN'T the cool kid in high school and thus desperately want reassurance that those awesome, amazing, out-of-their-league girls would go for them. So they write Awesome Girl/Loser, where she loves him not just despite, but because of, his average Joe status.
