UGHHHH my God, Iowa. I can only hope his candidacy is short-lived. In fact, I hope a LOT of things about him are short-lived.
Surprisingly, I'm just as disgusted at Diana Gabaldon (not because fic = people in importance but because it's SO RANDOM that it completely caught me off guard). It takes a hefty amount of ignorance and ego to say things like that (and something tells me there's not a whole ton of HER BOOK'S fanfic going on out there, seeing as I had to google who the hell she was) and makes me wonder if she goes around at Halloween warning kids in homemade costumes that they're doing blatant image stealing.
Seriously, that kind of batshit just does not belong in power unless you live in the book 1984. And even then, no one's really happy about it.
I, too, had absolutely no clue who that author was until I googled. And now I have one new author whose books I will not bother to read, since she has such a big problem with fandom. I loved that there were a lot of comments to that entry along the lines of: "Bitch, how about you LEGALLY back up that 'fanfic is illegal' idea?"
If I ever get published, and if I ever have my own fandom, I will be so embracing of fandom and fanfic and shipping, I swear.
I love that socialized healthcare = Nazi but IMPLANTING A CHIP = America!fuckyeah. The idea of establishing an island country and starting over from scratch keeps looking better and better.
Yeah, I can honestly say I'll never read a thing of hers (not that I have thusfar) and won't miss it a bit. I've never heard of anyone being so blatantly callous and bitter to a completely harmless group of people.
...I looked up her Wiki and she got famous by posting her novel in a forum. Maybe she's worried someone will get famous by writing fanfic better than she writes. Hmm.
I know, right? I guess everything's okay as long as it's not one of those damn dirty liberals suggesting it. We already have Arizona making it illegal to have ethnic study classes because they encourage people to overthrow the government. Seriously. No, really. But the Tea Party can actually waltz around with guns in their protests and talk about ACTUALLY overthrowing the government. ASDFGHJKL.
She was bitching about a charity auction. To help cancer patients.
I have never heard of the author, or her series, but now I'm glad I haven't. Seriously, bashing all fanfic writers (and thank you very much, but last I checked, TMNT was allowed. Before the sell at least) instead of just asking that people not write her works? If she's so "net-savvy" and has so much interaction with her fans as those in the comments suggest, why didn't she just say "this bothers me, please don't ".
As to the charity thing...eh. Contact the person offering, tell them not to make that offer, and if she (the author) decides she can, make a donation instead. If she can't, well, not everyone can. It's still her work being used.
((If I ever get published, I'm making up a new screenname and writing fanfics! lol.))
Well, it's not MY charity thing, so...can't. *lol* But seriously. Just tell people not to write fic if you don't want it. It won't actually stop them from writing and exchanging it, but it'll keep them from archiving on the net and using it to raise money for charity. Which is so harmful.
In today's news, Iowa candidate suggests microchipping illegal aliens.
Bypassing all the ethical and moral wrong in that sentence, let me get right to the practical: if we had them in custody to microchip, why would we need to?
And yeah, Gabaldon's post was full of illogic and authorial bitchiness and straight-up wrong.
I guess the idea is to keep them from crossing the border illegally again, but as you said: really stupid plan. I'm glad he's just a candidate. Hopefully that doesn't last long.
I have no other word for this other than WAT. Also, like redbrunja said, if we have them in custody to microchip them, why even bother with it? Waste of resources and makes me feel like they're treating them no better than animals (seeing as I think microchip, I think the things you put in your pets should they run away for some reason so you can find them again).
As for the anti-fanfiction bitch? LEGAL REFERENCES PLEASE. It's called "Derivative works". Which fanfiction falls under. Same as fanart. LEARN YOU SOMETHING.
Course, that ALSO makes me wonder how she feels about fanart because the only difference I see between the two is the medium. And yes, it WILL piss me off if she's A-OK with fanart, but not fanfiction. >T
Wellll... the microchipping argument has been dug into the ground. Wash, rinse, repeat.aflightoffancyMay 5 2010, 02:27:51 UTC
So I'll focus on the fanfiction one, which I actually bothered to go out and do some research on. Now, I had been under the impression from a long time ago that it was, technically, illegal, but couldn't remember. (Plus, maybe it had changed since I first started reading fan fiction.)
From what I've gathered, fan-fiction IS, in fact, illegal. Not criminal, but in civil law, mind you, mostly because the copyright holder holds the right to make derivative works. Fanfiction is strictly a copyright violation. (3) You won't go to jail, but it can go to civil court, where the rules are a lot different. (You can be forced to testify against your best interest, for one.) (2
