Am I the only one who thinks Cain got a raw deal? He sacrifices the best of his produce- and he's a farmer, that's his livelihood. He put all his effort into growing these plants, tending them, weeding them, harvesting and selecting, and gave them up in an offering to God. God says bitch please, I ain't no vegan. I think I was totally with Cain up until the brother thing. Then again, this is the God who asked Abraham to sacrifice his most beloved son, so it wasn't that much of a leap of logic. Sounds like a communication breakdown to me.

I think the sheep superiority might have roots in the fact that the religion's first practicers were shepherds. Still, there's something a bit creepy about a merciful and loving god delighting in the sacrifice of a baby animal over the sacrifice of unthinking produce that represents the same love and amount of effort. The religion has an obscene obsession with blood, sometimes. Christ's blood, sacrificial blood, etc. I think it's funny when Christians use ritual sacrifice of animals as a mark against Pagans when instructions on how to properly sacrifice animals are still in the Bible.

I always wondered about stories like that myself. I have a suspicion that the oral tradition they came from was a holdover from polytheistic days when it wasn't uncommon to assume the gods were drunk off their ethereal asses.

Some of those gods must have been stoned out of their minds. Zeus stapled a womb to his thigh, had se with a woman in swan form, etc. Odin crossdressed. I love polytheism and all its fucked up glory.
