The last is an anomaly for me, to be sure, but I find it fascinating that only four presidents other than Reagan were regular diarists -- George Washington, John Quincy Adams, James K. Polk, and Rutherford B. Hayes. Reagan was the first president in 100 years to keep a diary, all the more odd because before becoming president he had never done so, having thought "of himself as a man of celluloid, not of paper" (from David Shribman's
review in The Boston Globe).
