Track 13. Words, playing me deja vu
Like a radio tune I swear I've heard before
Chill, is it something real
Or the magic I'm feeding off your fingers
[‘Come Undone’ - Duran Duran]

Jason seemed to have really lost his coordination. He was sweating by the time he got back to the apartment from the sheer pace he had rolled back there. The picnic and the basket got left in his shock. He just wanted to get home, even if he didn't know what he was going to do when he got there. After the second failed proposal and Taylor's shock news, they had stared at each other for a few moments before Taylor burst into tears and a string of apologies, trying to back away from Jason as quickly as she could. But before he had a chance to fight off the shock and catch her, she was gone, running as quickly as she could out of the park, and she was a trained rookie cop, so that was saying something. Jason might be good in his chair, but he had no hope of chasing her.

He had collected the ring, tempted to leave it lying there because clearly it was a fucking jinx, and tried to get home as quickly as he could. But she was gone when he got there. Her little car not where it had been in the drive when they left for the picnic. He paused at the door of the apartment and put his head in his hands. He couldn't even think straight and it was a struggle to get through the door, it banging his knees when he lost his grip on the doorknob. He swore loudly and harshly, shoving the door roughly out of his way with his elbow and managed to get inside before it swung shut again. That's it. The fucking spring-close on it had to go. He spun around and wheeled himself into the living room, starting to trawl through the drawers there for anything to knock the damn door off its hinges.

Sam came out of the bathroom, her hair still wet as she tried to find out what all the noise was. She'd been getting ready for work slowly, hoping that she could maybe just put it off a bit longer and stay here with Tim. She'd been playing with the idea of asking him out on a date, but so far the words hadn't made it past her lips. She held a comb in one hand and her toothbrush in the other as she stared at Jason rummaging through the drawers. "So I'm guessin' this ain't ya lookin' for a very tiny Mac. I heard her car, thought maybe ya were in it with her, or somethin'. Guess not..."

Sam was prepared to ramble for a little while longer, scared to ask the one question she really wanted to know. Besides, how would Jason take it knowing Sam had known before him? She also wanted to ask him if he was okay, but the look on his face told her not to even ask.

"No, I'm not!" Jason all but growled, spinning around to look at her. He was breathless and the sweat was trickling down the side of his face. His hands were resting heavily on the wheels of the chair and he just looked at her without knowing what to say at first. So much was sweeping through his confused mind right then and he wasn't sure if he was angry or upset or hurt or confused. Probably all at once. "Mac, she's... I..." He just shook his head and took the ring from his pocket to launch it roughly into the wall. Anger was going to win out at first.

Sam flinched as the box hit the wall. She'd seen both boys angry before, but for some reason Jason being angry now caught her off guard. She took her comb into her other hand so she could move to pick up the ring, and hold it safely. "Did ya... she turn ya down?" Sam asked, watching him carefully. She was tempted to go and wake up Tim to be her shield.

Jason leaned forward and put his head in his hand again. "No, she didn't turn me down. I don't think she even heard me propose because she was... she was..." He shook his head. "She was too busy telling me she was pregnant."

Sam was glad he couldn't see her face, unable to bring herself to fake surprise. She did, however, let out a sigh of relief at knowing Mac hadn't turned Jason down. That was something at least. Even if Mac had bolted now, there was still hope. Although now Sam wanted to skip work to go and make sure Mac was okay, but she had to assume her friend was going somewhere safe like her parents. Hopefully she'd be okay for a few hours. "J..." Sam didn't actually know what she wanted to say. Did she apologise? "Do ya... do ya need anythin'?"

Jason looked up at her, though his head was still resting against her hand. "Not so shocked at the news," he noted tiredly, but he wasn't exactly surprised. Of course Taylor had told Sam. Sam had been there in the past and he could imagine discovering you were pregnant was no easy thing to face alone. For him, though, it was just a horrible sense of deja vu and it was making him feel sick deep in his gut. He couldn't go through all this again. He just couldn't. Even if Taylor wasn't with the kid's father anymore, he just couldn't be a dad to someone else's kid. It hurt too fucking much.

"It's not someone else's," Sam said as she watched him. She could only begin to guess what had been going through his mind, but it was a good one. "She worried herself sick thinkin' ya would think she cheated on ya. She didn't, J. She ain't been with anyone but you. Not for a long time."

"Before me, then. An immaculate conception!" The words caught in Jason's throat as he came close to helpless and frustrated tears. "It's not mine, Sam, and I can't do this again! Sooner or later, the fucking shit storm has to stop raining down on me!"

Sam placed all her things down on a nearby surface and quickly checked her watch before she came over to crouch in front of Jason. "I don't know how it's happened, J, but this ain't part of the shit storm. Mac is just as scared, and upset. She needs ya... Just like I needed someone. I didn't tell anyone though, and I didn't ask for help. She's at least told ya. I know it must seem cruel now, but think about it." She stood up again, and leaned in to kiss Jason's forehead despite the sweat still covering his face. "I really wanna stay with ya, but I can't. I got work."

Jason had to do a slight double-take to make sure he heard her right. "You're just... going? You're leaving?" he cried and then frowned, wheeling himself away from her. He thought he should probably go back to the drawers, but he couldn't even remember why he was looking through them in the first place. "Fine. Just... whatever. Fuck!" He didn't know what to do or where to go. Who the fuck was he supposed to talk to? Was he supposed to try and talk to Taylor, even if she wouldn't answer him? It felt like the hospital all over again and the wheelchair felt as heavy as all fuck under his hands.

"J, I have to! I've already taken three days off work because I've been 'sick'. I can't be late today, they might get suspicious. I would if I could, ya know that." Sam threw her hands up palm outwards. "Ya got no idea how much I wanna stay, but I can't. TIM!," she called out, looking towards the bedrooms. "Hey, T! Get ya lethargic ass out here." She smiled at Jason, and came over to him to give him another kiss. "I love ya, but I really gotta go. I'll leave ya in T's capable hands, okay?" She gave him a little wave and kissed Tim quickly as her dishevelled boyfriend made his appearance, blue eyes questioning silently why he got called out of bed. "Take care of him, and no beer! See ya later, boys!"

Jason was numb and he just stared at the ruffled mess that was Tim Riggins standing in the doorway looking about as bewildered as Jason felt. They sort of stared at each other blankly for a few moments before Jason just mumbled, "Fuck..." with a small shake of his head.
