It's not the Highly Improbable Crossover... but gehayi and I still should not be left alone to plot. Things like this happen.

Prompt for January 25:
Shadows.

Disenchantment

Regulus finds Peter attempting to relax by the lake. It's just as well; they know by now that if they're going to talk on a regular basis, it has to happen on neutral territory, and that's rather difficult to come by indoors.

"Well, fancy meeting you here."

There's a moment before Peter glances in his direction. "Oh, hello. How are you?"

"Not bad, all things considered. I see you survived your exams."

"I did. Probably completely failed the Muggle Studies one, but that's what comes of striving for accuracy."

"Not as though you wanted to do more than impart what you learned before you got here on the examination board."

"True. But I suppose if they don't take it to heart, they'll have their reasons."

Regulus raises an eyebrow - that doesn't sound like Peter at all. "You say that as though reason has much to do with it. Are you feeling all right?"

"Of course. Well... perhaps a bit off, but that's likely just from winding down after all those exams."

But Peter doesn't sound thoroughly convinced of that, for all he's not showing many other signs that he's aware something's off. Regulus doesn't comment further on it, for the moment, instead making his own observations while letting the conversation take its natural course.

Peter finally makes his excuses and gets up to head inside. Regulus takes the moment while Peter's back is turned to draw his wand, and then calls, "Oh, and by the way?"

Peter turns around again. "Yes?"

"Finite incantatem."

It's a shot in the dark more than anything else, but judging by the change in Peter's expression, it works.

"...Those bloody bastards. I hope I didn't make a prat of myself in front of anyone else."

"When was your last exam?"

"This morning."

"You probably didn't have time, then. I'd heard rumors that the examination board did that, but never had any proof before now."

Peter sighs. "They shouldn't be doing it to anyone, is the point. If they really want to convince people they're working for the betterment of everyone, they might try an approach that doesn't include Unforgivables."

"You know that, and I know that, and they probably know it as well. Suppose it's all part of their attempts to discourage common sense in others, so they don't have to be jealous of it."

"I wouldn't be surprised. Thanks, in any case."

"It was no trouble." And it wasn't; Regulus doesn't have many friends, but he does care for the ones he has. He also prefers it when they're in their right minds.

"Just... keep your eyes open when you're sitting exams next year, will you?"

"Oh, they won't try anything on me. Mother would shout down the school at the very implication involved in their trying it."

Peter snorts. "Fair enough. Anyway, I really should go in. Particularly now I've got this mess to mull over. I'll see you around."
