Honestly, I think this was when the fear of teachers being inappropriate, or students accusing teachers of same started being a big thing. And the result was the removal of privacy for school counseling sessions. At least as I remember it.

I could buy that, but...how can they expect students to confide in Buffy if who-knows-who is listening in?

I think fufaraw is correct. My counselor's door was always left open, and I graduated in 1988!

Could also be a weird filming thing. Like when they film people talking in the next room privately when IRL, there's no way the other person wouldn't hear every word. Does that make sense?
