Hoshi
Hoshi didn't feel like cooking that night, so she ran out to Ching Tai for food and was on her way back to the dorms. Coming from a time and place where crime was virtually non-existent, she had no qualms about walking alone at night and was not paying much attention to her surroundings.
Vampire
If she had been paying attention she might have noticed that she was being shadowed since she left Ching Tai.
Hoshi
It wasn't until she got to a truly secluded area of the school grounds that Hoshi's sensitive hearing detected some unusual sounds. Was there someone else out here?
Vampire
From out of the darkness there was a growl and then a figure rushing towards Hoshi.
Hoshi
Hoshi shrieked as she was knocked down to the ground, but there was no one around to hear her.
Vampire
The vampire snarled in delight as he opened his mouth to reveal his fangs and move to bite her in the neck.
Hoshi
Oh, this was not good. She gave a hard kick at the vampire's legs and tried to roll off her back with no success.
Vampire
The kick was enough to push the vampire back a bit but as soon as it recovered was already attempting to attack Hoshi.
Hoshi
Hoshi regretted not arguing with her parents when they wouldn't let her study with an aikido master back home in Kyoto. The vampire had the advantage. She was absolutely terrified and as panic set in, she was less able to fight back.
Mel
And suddenly the vampire went flying through the air and smashed up against a tree.
And if Hoshi were to look up she would see a blurred figure of a human girl carrying a battle-axe type object as she rushed in to attack the monster.
"You all right?!" she called out as she blocked the vampire kick.
Hoshi
"I think so," said Hoshi, feeling a little dazed. Then she realized that the other girl was actually fighting the vampire and doing quite well at it. She scrambled to her feet and watched with astonishment.
Mel
The girl was rushing in with the pointy part of her axe handle when the vampire caught her by surprise with a blow to the gut. She stumbled back a few feet before swinging her axe and neatly beheading the vampire which promptly exploded to dust.
The girl leaned over and exhaled a sigh before getting her bearings. She turned to look over at Hoshi. "You're sure you're okay? No bites or anything?"
Hoshi
"Whoa," said Hoshi, staring at the space where the vampire had been. She reached up and touched her neck. "No, no bites. That was really a vampire?"
Mel
"Yeah," said the girl as she straightened up a bit. "They've been popping up a little bit lately. I'm Mel by the way, I've got a bit of a history with these guys."
Hoshi
"I'm Hoshi," she said, still rubbing her neck to convince herself that there really weren't any bites. "I've heard stories, but I had no idea they even existed. Or, at least they didn't exist in my century."
Mel
"Not exactly," Mel said with a heavy sigh. "Some worlds don't have vampires, some do. Mine would be one of them that do. The island used to be pretty vampire free until recently. I don't suppose this pile of dust mentioned anything to you?"
Hoshi
"Not a word," said Hoshi, still a little rattled. If the vampire had said anything, she would have remembered. She was better at listening than fighting. "Where did you learn to fight like that?"
Mel
Mel shrugged as she flipped the scythe to lean up against her shoulder. "Mostly on the job. And spending my time in way too many bars. Where were you headed? Back to the dorm?"
Hoshi
"Yeah," said Hoshi, her dinner from Ching Tai completely forgotten. "You get to go to bars?" she asked. The poor girl had lived such a sheltered life back home.
Mel
"Doesn't everyone?" Mel asked cracking a grin. "Because seriously... where else can you have fun?"
Hoshi
"I was home-schooled. My parents and tutors didn't really believe in fun," said Hoshi. Yet another reason to hope that her parents wouldn't show up at Parents Weekend and insist that she come home for a proper education.
Mel
"Well, Hoshi," Mel said with a small smirk, "This may not have been the fun you were looking for tonight? But it's no reason for you to give up on Fandom yet."
Hoshi
"What if we run into another vampire on the way back to the dorms? And how do I defend myself against one next time?" asked Hoshi.
Mel
"I'll take you back there," Mel said waving her arm as an invitation. "And I bet if you ask the right person around here they can train you how to fight. In the meantime you're probably best to not walk around alone."
Hoshi
"I'll keep that in mind," said Hoshi, mentally adding "walking alone at night" to the list of things to be afraid of, along with elevators and large crowds. Tomorrow, she really had to check out the gym.
