The Game We Named ‘Peg Powler'.

Hidden high on the Derbyshire heather moorlands is a tiny, steep-sided grassy valley with a pretty little babbling brook. I spent many summer Sunday afternoons there as a young child picnicking with my parents, and relatives. My cousins and I would roll down the grassy banks, play ‘Tag’ and build dams. But the best ( Read more... )

I like the note at the end of a local legend. :)

Thanks.

I felt I should put it in as although the River Tees is a huge river around here I don't think many people living outside of the UK would have heard of it. I also thought that the connection between Peg Powler and the topic of 'Crossing the River Tees' might be missed.

Haha, I only notices that it was Tees and sounded similar to T's at second take :).

Very nice.

I'm glad you realised the pronunciation of the River and how it connects to the topic.

Thanks x

I love local legends like this, and you describe this one quite vividly. Great work, and very original take on the prompt!

Thank you x

It's odd that I knew of the legend when I didn't even live in that area and then to overhear someone talk about it when I haven't heard the name for about forty years was quite weird!

Legends are often born in fact. Fact that gets disrted by time and the retelling. Who's to say what started the legend of Peg Powler? Maybe it's not just kids who need to be wary when crossing the Tees :)
Unless, you happen to be a nastier beastie than she is.
Good job with the topic

That's an interesting thought actually. I just accepted it as a legend but you could well be right! I wonder how it did start?

Thanks for reading and commenting x

Refreshing take on the topic. Why are creeks and rivers so fascinating when you're a kid? I miss that. :)
