I know this is a week late, and a lot of people have already posted about the Brokeback Mountain snub, but like it or not here are my thoughts on the issue (reposted from a reply I wrote in someone else's blog).

First of all - love the icon. And remember, the Academy Awards are almost ALWAYS about politics. These awards are voted on by people who work in the industry - not film critics. So it really amounts to a big popularity contest in Hollywood. I can name tons of times when an actor won an oscar for their "body of work" or as a "lifetime achievement award" for a role they really didn't deserve to win.
