just in time for the holidays

After being so let down by Martyrs, I swore off the "controversial/hyped up" horror films. They all must be full of misery and disappointment and I didn't need to be enraged by a flippin movie. But I couldn't resist the call of one...

I thought MARTYRS was, for all the blatant awfulness, intriguingly subtle. It was heavy and exhausting, but I liked it.

But I fucking flat-out LOATHED Antichrist. Some of the visuals were gorgeous - I particularly liked the opening snowy scenes - but it just struck me as a self-serving load of bullshit - the director just putting any old bunch of junk onscreen/in the script because he felt like it, not because it served any narrative purpose or thematic value. Just total crap. Nonsense.

I went into both of them blind w/zero recommendations or reviews read, just stumbled across them last year and gave 'em a look. I read reviews of Antichrist afterward and don't think we watched the same movie.

i thought martyrs was exhausting because my friends and i were yelling at the screen so much in anger. hahaha

i did a lot of eye rolling through Antichrist though. A lot. Because there were some scenes where I definitely sort of saw out the corner of my eye the director fapping to his own movie. but i felt that way about Martyrs too. hehe

I watched it last year and TBH, I didn't really see it as a horror flick. It was more suspenseful to me more than anything. It didn't shock me either, but I did cringe a bit when she cut off her clit. I also enjoyed the forest setting and cinematography and would recommend it as a watch at least once. A lot of people said this movie was misogynistic, did you think it was?

the only misogynistic movie i've seen in a while, is fucking Dead Girl. ugh. but that movie hates on both men and women hardcore.

it's got occult elements which is why i consider it horror.

amongst the film dork circle i keep up with there was a very divisive attitude about this movie, outrage or total praise and i don't think it was deserving of either. :P
