Yeah. I've read enough horrible, bad, awful, head-desk inducing fanfiction over the years to at the very least understand that portion of the argument against fanfic.
The fact still remains though that I've read so many genuinely good ones. Written by people with fantastic writing skills who could easily move on to get their own work published. People who love a specific series who just want to have some fun. Due to this I tend to call naivete every time a published author has a diva fit over the "oh no internets!"
Diana Gabaldon should be grateful for her fanbase. Fanfiction and all. Period.

I'm also surprised I didn't hear about this sooner. Half my flist consists of writers, many of them do fanfic.
I forget what it was called, but CHARLIE GETS TURNED INTO A VAMPIRE. You can Google it.
