In one of the less-frequented storage closets. The foolish creatures had amassed a surprisingly great deal of utensils in such a small place.

Hm. I wondered if perhaps their nesting places might show some indication of their motivations - besides liking shiny things, that is. Can it be assumed that they prefer enclosed spaces?

From this nest, at least, yes - one can assume they like secure surroundings. I suppose the foolish creatures believe it will offer protection from their inevitable destruction.
