It usually starts with one idea and a single character. And the desire to want to know more about said character, possibly in general, possibly in relation to other people. There's no real clear-cut way to be inspired to write anything. It just kind of happens most of the time. Flexible but inspiring prompts help sometimes too, especially if you get really good ones to work with. Other than that, I can't really put into words how the fic ideas come.
*nods* I suggested that they just think of a character they're interested in first, and then try to think of a situation from there that they'd like to see that character in, buuut you're a lot more poetic than me, it seems. |D <3
...Ahahaha, you don't...want to get me starting on giving advice to people who are trying to write...but to keep it short, this basically says everything I'd want to say anyway:
I'll look forward to seeing what they come up with. :] Though...TBH, I really don't think video game characters are ALWAYS less complicated character-development-wise than anime/manga...it really depends on the game and anime/manga, and the characters as well.
He is really, seriously pretty amazing. His book On Writing...omg YES. ♥ When I was younger, before I'd actually READ anything by him, I'd always assumed he was just a hack, like (to use a CURRENT example) James Patterson, but...now that I've ACTUALLY READ some of his works...just, Wow. -*___*-
To make it more fanfic-focused rather than I Want To Be A Professional/Published Writer ...ish...I'd say Tao has the right of it. They should pick a character they feel like they know and understand, and go from there. My first big essay into the World of Fanfic was "My Point of Weakness" (...which...is pretty awful by my standards today, yeah, BUT EVERYONE STARTS SOMEWHERE K), and I started writing it because at the time it was The Story I'd Always Wanted To Read. I was having a LOT of trouble finding good, IC SasuSaku fic, so I decided I'd just have to write one for myself. :]
XD I'M JEST SAYIN'~ 'Cause yeah, someone like Noelle from TotA is way less-developed than, say, Sakura from Naruto...but Yuri from ToV is a HELL of a lot more
