A Side-By-Side Comparison

Jul 17, 2007 21:06

I originally posted this is harryhermione, but since it's currently on Super!Lockdown, darsynia requested that I post it here. =) It is a side-by-side comparison of the pages of the "book" from Flickr, and pages of the "book", aka the Leaked Copy.

Images of multiple pages from TWO leaked copies of Deathly Hallows DIRECTLY under the cut. I'm guessing you guys don't mind spoilers, but just sayin'.

Also, some big images. 700+ width. Sorry for the size, and for your connection.

So, here's how it is. I finally got so tired of checking ONE version of "Deathly Hallows" with the OTHER version of "Deathly Hallows", that I just had to do this. For my own sanity, and for your's!

Well, hopefully.

There are currently two main speculative copies of the book. There is the widely known "leaked copy," with digital images of every page (*links removed, 'cause they're in the H/Hr comm* I don't know where they could be here, though?), as well as a flickr account that has six very clear images of what THEY claim is the book.

However, both copies are very different. Below I've supplied each of the Flickr images next to the corresponding page(s) of the massive "leaked copy." I'll point out major differences or similarities, but I don't really have much to say on which is real, or which isn't. I've seen most people note that the Flickr pages are a superior writing style. Also, clearer, and thus more believable. If anyone wishes to look for JKR "quirks" (four periods in ellipses, capitalized yelling, etc), be my guest. Speculation is lovely.

The ONLY changes done to these pictures are resizing and, in the case of the "leaked copy", I tried some hard and fast ways to darken/sharpen the text. The "leaked copy" is cropped down to bare essentials - usually just the page at the same angle it was, just cropped down to include the title name, the page number and the text. This was because, otherwise, the images were HUGE. If you want the full images, I'll get around to uploading them soon - http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v46/perididdle/WTFDeathlyHallows/

Let's begin.

--
Part 1: The Table of Contents
--

Flickr copy of the Table of Contents. All looks well.

Leaked copy of the Table of Contents. Difficult to read, but you'll notice - the page numbers match up, but as for chapter titles, they don't at all. Do we have OFFICIALLY released titles? That's one thing I have not tried to do, is find those.

--
Part 2: The Title Page
--

Flickr, last page of the Table of Contents. Straight into the second title page - this is how the book is usually set up. Not quite in OOtP, because there's another page of chapter titles, but in HBP you can see this setup.

Leaked, the last page of the Table of Contents. Aha. I must say, this is my favorite part of the comparison. Poems? Hrm. Hrm, indeed. I will note that in the copyright page of this copy, they credit both poems. And the ISBN matches the one available online, which I only know because kalishaka has mad ISBN reading skillz.

Leaked, the next page after the above. NOW we see the title page. It acts the same as the title page does in OotP - it just goes to the next right-hand page, since it couldn't go right after the table of contents. I thought the addition of the poems and quotes in one copy was very interesting.

--
Part 3: Chapter 1
--

Flickr, page one. It corresponds to, well, every other incarnation of the front page.

Including the leaked copy. Exact word-for-word. However, that will be the ONLY time it measures up perfectly. And we've known the first page for a while, at least, I've seen a few people note they have? So, take that as you will.

--
Part Four: Chapter 3...or 7?
--

Flickr, first page of chapter three (pages 30 and 31.) Hermione, Harry and Ron are at the Dursleys. Note the use of JK's caps on the second page.

Leaked, first page of chapter three. It really sucks, because the quality is SO blurry and the flash drowned it out so badly, you can hardly read it. But in this one, the Dursleys are...well...departing, as the chapter title says. The titles do NOT match up at all, the text has no similaritiesneither do the illustrations. But another interesting photo goes with this set...

The same image used in the Flickr page, but on chapter seven (vs. chapter three) and under the title 'The Will of Albus Dumbledore' (vs. 'Wither Thou Goest') Interesting.

--
Part Five: Chapter 16
--

Flickr, pages 312 and 313, during 'Chapter 16 - The Second Cave.' I love this page - Hermione recalls the alchemy symbol. Hmm, hmm. Oh! Four-dot elipses on the first half of the first page. Thought it might be worth noting.

Leaked copy, pages 312 and 313, during 'Chapter 16 - Godric's Hollow.' None of the same things going on, from what I can tell. Except Harry/Hermione hand holding. Heh. This one also has some four-dot ellipses.

--
Part Six: The Epilogue
--

Flickr, finally, the damn thing that started it all - the epilogue. I know most of us have read it, with Albus Severus and Hugo, etc. THIS ONE IS DIFFERENT. Very different. It looks like Ron has A) Married Gabrielle, and B)...gotten some freaking charm and composure. WTF is with that? Anyway, yeah. 3 dot ellipses, here. (Jeezy creezy, JK uses a lot if this is real.)

Leaked copy, the infamous epilogue. Blech. I don't think I have to elaborate, here. This chapter title and art is of course the same.

So, there you have it. Some straight observations and comparisons. These are the two versions I know of - if anyone has a third or fourth leaked version (I've seen some articles mentioning multiple more), I would looove to see it and possibly add it to the post, if I can find the correct pages. I'll also add more if the flickr account updates with more. What do I think about the whole thing? I'm not sure. At present, I would prefer the flickr copy to be correct - the epilogue on the leaked copy is such pathetic drivel, I can't even comprehend. But I suppose we'll just have to wait. I'll be at the B&N release party at midnight, US central time - but I'll be waiting for word from England to know which copy to expect. I'm leaving it to any of you out in countries that'll get it before me to keep us poor yanks updated. My B&N doesn't let us touch the book until we've paid - we give our money, they ring it up, we get our book. Supposedly, it's "efficient." Boo.
