Do the family bonds really break when you send your sim to uni? I certainly hope not!

They are still in the family tree. But the interactions are otherwise exactly the same as for family friends. You can visit your parents but don't do anything a guest would't do. There seems to be no intermediate relationship between household member and friend. In Sims 2 and 3 you did not move out when you went to live in a dorm, not in the same way as if you bought a house for yourself. Here you do.
