Day 4: Book Recommendation, and More Music Crap

I just finished Chuck Klosterman’s Killing Yourself to Live, and I enjoyed it immensely.  Supposedly it’s about him driving across the country and visiting places where rock stars died, to ruminate on whether or not the best thing people can do for their careers is to die.

Nirvana, et al - I'm with you on this one.
And who said you weren't a music person? Identifying yourself in a song is the same as identifying it in a book, even when the music jabber in the book goes over one's head. I am also not a Radiohead fan. I know these past two entries have perhaps not called directly for a response, but as a "music person" I've found them very compelling. Even though music is my whole life, I have often in the past avoided discussing it at length with most persons. This has changed in recent years for me, as I work harder to not be such an em-effing bitch. But upon reading your feelings, I wonder if it's a sort of epidemic problem with the way we approach art.

Well anyway, a few "fuck you"s from The Bay.

I think you're right. A lot of people sit out any discussions on art unless it's on something "safe." It has to be an album, artist, or movie that's "safe," and therefore universally adored or abhored. Otherwise, people don't want to be embarassed by an "expert" who has nothing to do but delve into the area of their "expertise."

Or maybe they don't want to come off as a snooty, know-it-all.

I'm definitely a "don't get burned by an expert" sideline sitter.
