Transform and Roll Out!

I saw Transformers and I had every intention of writing a review, but I feel a little overwhelmed by the spectacle.

I barely paid attention to the story, which is not a lot of story to begin with, but the effects, explosions, and battles kept me in rapt attention.

After years of sliding down the ladder of SFX respectability by bringing to life Jar ( Read more... )

I read this in dread anticipation. I need a review from a trusted friend before I go see this. I mean, the last Transformers I was involved with was Beast Wars. It doesn't get better than that, so I'm nervous as hell about this movie.

Well, here it is: like you, I hold Beast Wars on a pedestal not as a great TV Show, a great kids' show, but as a good story, period. I cried my eyes out as a kid at the animated movie, watched it again in disgust at 12 when I realized that all my favorite characters died to make way for new characters, ie; new toys ( ... )

Hmmm.
I'll see it, but I don't want to pay full price.

I probably will though. So to summarize, looks great, dumb as shit?

Yes. The bulk of brain power went to animating and planning the action scenes, and once again, Michael Bay's material is questionable, but he shoots an amazing looking movie. You will never look cooler than when you are in a Bay movie.

i never expected the story to be great, but if they would've cut 20 "story" minutes out of the movie and consolidated their necessary elements into other scenes, it couldve been so much better. they could've eliminated every groaner joke and every scene that felt like it came out of a 1980s teen comedy, and then had a kickass flick. but the effects were so good, i think in the long run, i can let the faults slide. most would blame the films faults on michael bay, but those who do are looking for an easy scapegoat. bay made a fantastic movie to watch. i personally love the human perspective on the battles, it made the robots so much more ominous and threatening.

isnt it a shame that action fans rarely get a smart action film? one that doesnt adhere to the genre's supposed self-fulfilling prophecy that all action movies have to be "dumb." hollywood needs to sac up and realize that actions fans know how to watch movie that goes beyond two-dimensional characters.

It's funny that most modern action films ape Die Hard, which is one of the smartest action movies, ever, but they copy all the wrong shit.
