I'm for anything that gets you through the night, be it prayer, tranquilizers or a bottle of Jack

He should have left his phone in the car.  He should have stayed with his phone in the car, and not walked through the familiar worn door to the bar.  Should have stopped after the second shot.  Or the third.  Or the fourth.  His keys were now in the possession of his waitress, not that he would have driven anywhere.  He wished she had taken his ( Read more... )

Lisbon's new partner, Sean O'Leary, had invited her out for drinks tonight; they got decently well, and had gotten closer recently in the last two weeks after a particularly difficult case. Home invasion, kids killed. It was the kind of thing that bonded you. She'd denied the offer for drinks, though, heading home instead. She'd just barely set down her keys and grabbed a slice of leftover pizza when her phone rang.

"Lisbon." Silence. "Hello?" More silence. "...look, if you wanna talk, say something now. I'm hanging up."

"Did you get a name for your John Doe yet?" She'd been working a homicide found in a car without identification when he'd left in the early afternoon. He thought he'd managed to sound normal, whatever that was, when he asked the question. Barely a slur at all.

It was almost undetectable, but she knew his voice so well that just that fraction of a sound when his voice faltered a bit was something she could hear loud and clear.

There was no way that he had called just to ask that; she wasn't buying it in the least.

"Sam," her voice was firm, almost concerned. "Where are you?"

"O'Leary seemed to have some good leads. He's a pretty bright kid. A little wet but the job'll take care of that soon 'nuff." He ignored her question as if he hadn't heard it, and nodded his thanks to the waitress when she set down his refill of tequla.
