THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

It is not a secret that Echigo is the most beautiful province in the warring states. It is particularly true for the spring and summer seasons when waves of lush blossoms create riots of colour all over the prosperous land.

It is, however, less widely known that half of the flowers in the gardens of Kai have sprouted up from the seeds delivered from Echigo.

The first time Kenshin sent Takeda Shingen flowers was to honour his late brother who had perished during one of the clashes of the Takeda and Uesugi troops. Dispatching actual flowers to his esteemed rival would have seemed somewhat improper, so Kenshin chose to send seeds as a symbol of new birth that awaited Shingen’s brother now that his current life had come to an end. It was up to Shingen whether he wanted to toss the gift into a garbage pit or plant it. Shingen obviously chose the latter, for the gardens of Kai soon ran ablaze with luscious peonies, playful China asters and gentle camellias.

Shingen joked that, in taking Kai, an army of flowers would certainly succeed where an army of men could not.

A HOLE IN THE SKY

The peculiar ambiguity of certain things in nature captivates Kenshin.

Take primrose for example, a perky little flower that begins to bloom so early in the spring that its blossoms are occasionally powdered with snow. In the language of flowers, these brightly coloured dots make a bold declaration: I cannot live without you; yet shining suncups, different members of the same genus, signify incompatibility.

People call Kenshin the Dragon of Echigo just as they call his rival the Tiger of Kai. A dragon is a wise and sensible beast of the sky, while a tiger is of the earth. They cannot ever come to terms with each other, and yet their tails are bound together. They complete each other in every way, and it is for this reason that they can never truly defeat one another.

And yet, in compliance with the laws of peculiar ambiguity of nature, some people do call Uesugi Kenshin the Tiger of Echigo.

And since it was somewhat a request exchange, here's the indescribable awesomeness I got out of it!

NB: If you're wondering where Kenshin got his hair, it's from here: Fuurin Kazan, where Kenshin is played by Gackt.
