THAT NEW BAGGAGE

“There used to be so much of… of this. Us.” Jurgen gestures around the faceless grey square, with its perfectly logical disposition of faceless grey buildings and faceless grey people meandering about.

Nothing has changed except the trajectory of their movement. It used to be a straight line, the perfect schoolbook geometry where Father planned everything in advance for his children. But they deserved that right to meander.

It’s too soon.

“No wonder,” says Preston, thoughtfully. “The population has receded after the Third World War.”

“That’s not what I mean.” Jurgen smiles. There’s not enough of him, Preston, either. So much vacant space, so little to fill it with. “Inside.” He reaches out and lets his hand hover near Preston’s heart.

Oh, there is something. His children. Mary. An old exit wound that is Viviana. A scar that is Partridge. In a way, John is luckier than most Librians.

“He tried to fix us, you know,” says Jurgen. “Father. I can see where he was coming from. If you remove colour rendition from a video device, you’ll still get your visual. But the picture just won’t be the same.”

John gives him that barely perceptible smile of his, like he still feels the need to hide it from the Tetragrammaton.

“What’s your favourite colour then?”

It is a question that can only be answered by someone from the Underground. Librians were brought up to appreciate only three colours: black, grey and occasionally white, seeing as those are the most functional. John hasn’t spent nearly enough time with the Resistance to develop fondness for anything else.

“I’ve always had an odd affinity for purple,” Jurgen very nearly grins because he knows it annoys Preston who cannot manage a proper grin yet and claims he looks ridiculous when he tries.

“Oh.” Pause. “What the hell does purple look like anyway?”
