You forgot to mention the red scare, the locking up of American citizens of Japanese descent after Pearl Harbor, etc. For the whole of this century, I believe we have done about the same thing, falling a little farther between economic and moral bubbles we've floated on since the great depression. The difference now is only that as nationalism is flagging, we are more ready to recognize this behavior

of LIVING in these times that makes if *seem* worse than anything in the past... however, I don't know if we've hit Depression era, WWII rationing, Vietnam numbers (body bags) yet...
I think that the access to instant information - television, the Internet, etc., brings these matters closer to home than any previous time before....
that's my buffalo nickel's worth... ask me this question in 30 years. If I am eating virtual cat food out of a titainum can and pushing my belonings around in a hover shopping cart, I may revise my limited opinion.:)
We are coming to the end of the current swing of quasi-fascism in Amerika, fascism with an evangelical perversion thrown in.
I don't expect there to be a Republican in the white house next year...or for the next sixteen years.
Remember how everything shook out when the other Bush left office and Clinton Came in? That's going to seem like a Quaker Meeting after the change in history that is coming down in November.
But remember, Amerikans are Phiqqle, especially when culture fugues like Millenialism come along and they think they have to get "Right with God" or else.
I'm expecting a Spiritual Revolution in the coming times, on par with the Cultural/Sex revolution and the Computer Revolution of prior decades. And not a return to stiffling old time religions, but a break thru in a truer spiritual relationship with the universe.
It's not going to be Utopia, but at least it will be it will be interesting...in a good way.
Habeas Corpus is an interesting topic, because as a right it is a uniquely English invention: if you were to file a writ of Habeas Corpus with a French Court you'd be laughed out of the building. Free speech is also another interesting topic, because while in the United States it is a constitutional right, in most countries it's a legislated right: and whoever passes the laws granting you a right can repeal that law. It's something we are right now seeing in Canada where reporters are being brought up on trial for the crime of writing something unpleasant and losing their jobs due to the acts of a governmental tribunal. And so is privacy rights: the UK have covered that island with police surveillance cameras which have arguably invaded the rights of UK citizens without preventing crime

Yeah, there's always chaos created by competition between different power interests. The same crew that gave us Iran Contra has also given us this whole destruction of the Constitution.
But you now have a war between the oil companies and the rest of the economy. Palin definitely waves that oil flag high, where basically the rest of the economy can go to hell, only the oil companies matter.
However you have some pretty huge guns backing Obama, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out. This may be the revolt of the rest of the economy against the oil companies.
