When I was about eight years old, I wrote to the local paper's "Ask Dr. Science" column with a question that had been bothering me: Are there stars between the galaxies?  I was very keen on galaxies at the time, and I couldn't help wondering if every last star in the universe was neatly packed into one of them, or if there might be a thin mist of
