laurellady and I watched Fargo last night; neither of us had seen it before. Now I know why people have been pestering me to see it for more than a decade. What a weird, wonderful film! Frances McDormand in particular gave one of the most textured, beautiful performances I've ever seen; for once I agree with the Academy. Her "I just don't understand" at ( Read more... )

That movie pissed me off. Why did he even need the money in the first place?

I actually liked that that was left hanging. Clearly he'd gotten in over his head with something; people do that all the time, and they build houses of cards (like his game with falsified financing with GMAC) believing they just need a little maneuvering room to make a recovery. And then things get worse.

For that character, who had no obvious signs of substance abuse, I figured compulsive gambling was the most likely explanation. Or it could be as simple as living beyond his salary, trying to keep up appearances with his rich in-laws. But by keeping that implicit, he became every guy who's gotten himself painted into a corner like that, for any reason at all.

I'm just glad that the father-in-law got what was coming to him. I know so many old Norweigan fucks like that who deserve a hot slug in their lutefisk-holes... it was gratifying to see Mr. Pink plug him.

Just remember that we don't actually act like that here in Minneapolis. Up north, though? Oh ya you betcha they're reel hicks up there ya know eh?

Texas has the heroes of the Alamo and all we get is a lumberjack with a jacked-up pituratiary gland. Woo.

My mom grew up near Milwaukee, so that Swedish-influenced upper Midwestern accent hits me right in the heart. After 50 years in California she's still occasionally prone to that "oh, yaaah" version of "yes."

There are a couple of other Coen brother films I haven't yet seen; they've been moved to the top of my Netflix queue.

If The Big Lewbowski is one of those then by all means. Same goes from Barton Fink and O Brother Where Art Thou?

If you like Bill Macy, you might also enjoy 'Edmond'.
