Awareness is slow in coming. Maybe it's the seagulls that first rouse you. Maybe it's the sound of the waves. Maybe it's the gentle lap of warm salt water at your feet and ankles

[Lucas squints as he looks out over the water. The largest body of water he'd ever seen before was simply a small lake. He wishes for a moment that he could enjoy the new experience, but at the moment? He simply couldn't. He was not at home or in a forest and his hawk was not in the sky above. It wasn't like Red to stray far. This wasn't right.]

[He looks to the odd device Autumn had explained to him. He thinks he understand how it works, though he's never seen anything like it before. This was far too many new experiences for one day. He presses the voice button.]
's it workin' right? Y'all out there like she said y'are?

[Jack looks down at his everyday uniform, puzzled.]
I'm afraid I don't understand. This is a His Majesty's Royal Navy-regulation uniform. I am the one who should be wondering about your getup. Are you a modern-day Merry Man?
[in person get!]oneperfecthitApril 3 2010, 19:20:43 UTC
Th' heck's that? I tend t' be pretty happy if that's what yer goin' on 'bout.
[He holds his hands up in front of him and shakes his head, still chuckling.] Look I ain't sayin' y'ain't seen yer share o' stuff, but a bit o' water here 'n there ain't th' same as scramblin' up a tree real fast 'r tryin' t' get away from a boar 'r hidin' in some thorny bushes 'r grapplin' with one o' them dang hunters. Jus' sayin' yer getup ain't gonna work fer me.

[Lucas leans back on his hands.]
Y'said it yerself, I ain't a Naval man so I don't think 'm obliged t' recognize yer rank there. Yer experience differs from mine a good deal, so I dunno if they's equal 'r not. I ain't gonna question th' age none. I'll take yer word on it.
Now y' gonna cook that squirrel 'r ya gonna let it rot out in th' sun? I can go 'n get some more. We's gonna have company soon.

[The temptation to continue the tiff almost gets the best of Jack; he manages to rein in his temper, though, and takes a deep breath, deciding to pick his fights.]
You start a fire. I'll get this kit ready, then go find some others.
[in person get!]oneperfecthitApril 3 2010, 21:07:01 UTC
Sure thing.
[Lucas stands from his spot and goes to gather stones, kindling and fuel. He returns, his arms filled with exactly what he needs and he does not seem encumbered at all. He digs a shallow pit with his hands and sets the rocks up around it. He piles the kindling in the middle and sets the bigger pieces of wood around it. When he's satisfied, he touches the kindling and it lights.]

[Jack strides off into the gloomy woods. He had encountered a seeming squirrel colony on his way here, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find another -
There's a sound. He whirls around, pistol cocked and aimed straight ahead. Waddling through the trees, its paws covered in honey, is an adolescent black bear. Remembering that delicious meal in the Gulf, Jack aims and fires. The bear drops dead, and he drags it back to where the boy is tending a growing fire.]
Even better than a squirrel, m'boy. We shall feast hearty tonight.

[Maybe all people who worked on a ship wore weird clothes like that. Lucas hadn't met many. Still, it looks way to fancy.]
Goin' t' a party 'r somethin'?

[He laughs]
Look, I ain't 'bout to go do my thing lookin' like [He motions to Aubrey's uniform.] that. Forest'd rip it t' shreds!

[Jack riles a bit.] I'll have you know this uniform has seen a hurricane, countless squalls, two years at sea, and five engagements with the enemy!

Take that up with Admiral Nelson. Look, boy, I never asked you to wear my uniform. I am quite comfortable, thank you.

Yeah, that'll do. 'm guessin' this was that big ol' bang sound I heard?
[He stands and rushes over to the captain to help]
Here, lemme help ya with that.
[Lucas lifts the other end of the bear easily and helps to walk it toward the fire]
Y'know how t' cut this guy up?
Reply
[He guffaws heartily at the joke and pulls out his knife, setting about removing the bear's paws.]

Well all right then.
[Lucas gets his knife out and assists in skinning and cutting up the bear.]
Ain't had one o' these in a good long while.
