Uh, so, team? If you were one of those people who offered unspecified bribes to read the One Where Rodney's Straight (which is what I've been calling it in my head and my word processor for weeks now), it's time to pony up. I need somebody who'll cheerlead me through it, and by this I mean - pseudobeta. Eventually I'll need a real beta, clearly, ( Read more... )

So, if I were to email you with the couple of pages I have and ask you to reassure me that it's not of the suck, you'd do that? Kid gloves criticism? Very, very gentle?

Because right now I can't even look at the document without flailing and yelling about how bad it is, and I've no idea why. It's making me all frustrated and upset. Which is dumb.

Later I'll need to be slapped around and given actual criticism, of course, but right now I think I'd probably actually cry in response to real beta-ing. ):

I'm, like, high on Buffy right now - I keep dropping Buffy-isms into normal conversation, and the Roomie and I haven't talked about anything else in weeks. It's amazing to watch someone experience the squee for the first time. Also, she's so in love with Spike it's embarrassing; she makes these adorable squeaking sounds and tells Buffy to, and I quote, "FUCKING GIVE HIM A HUG ALREADY." It's pretty great.

The drawback is that, watching the early seasons, I'm like, "Oh, babies, you're all so happy and innocent and - I'm sorry!" Rewatching it all fall to pieces in 5-6 has been twice as painful this time around. I think S7 may kill us both. :)

Seriously, though, if I were to randomly email you with kind-of-straight!Rodney being all flaily and confused, and pining!gay!John being all pining and adorable, would you read it and be my gentle but honest pseudobeta? I'm twelve kinds of insecure right now and I can't figure out why.

I WOULD DO THAT WITH A LOT OF GLEE!

And, it seems, capslock. Because capslocking means love? Or something.

But yes, dude. Email me! Please and thank you and often! Also, hard. Email me hard.

... okay, it's possible I'm a tad hyper right now, for no reason I can figure out.

I am known for being a brutally honest beta (just ask the two people above!) - although I only beta for people whom I think are top quality authors, so if that's what you're looking for, I am more than happy to oblige!

I may keep you on retainer for the actual beta, but right now I kind of need - not brutal honesty. I'm being all stupid and insecure about my writing and I'm not sure why, but. Yeah. I want, like, handholding and hairstroking and cuddling. I mean, virtual handholding, etc, but you get the idea.

Later, of course, I'll need somebody to beat me upside the head with the way I'm projecting my sexual identity crisis onto Rodney, and I feel like you're uniquely qualified for that, given your collection of such-themed icons. :)

Hee! Then I would stick with una and a for now! I mean, I've been told I can be supportive, but I don't think I'm very cuddly.

I'm so excited to read this though! OMG WRITE FASTER!

It sounds like you have plenty of cheerleaders, but I also volunteer myself. Actually, I can go ahead and so some cheering now. As far as OOC goes, there is always going to be some OOC in slash fanfiction. You are writing an extension of an exisiting plotline, and eventually, your characters are going to evolve into something different from the series if you write for any amount of time.

As for Sheppard sounding like Buffy, that's fine. He is a little buffyesque, and it can always be edited later if on the second read through he still sounds too buffy. Write now, just concentrate on getting the story down. First drafts are first for a reason.
