Hmm. I think reading your recs has pinpointed something about Eagle fandom that bothers me, and that is the frequent erasing of Cottia. (Completely understandable for movie fic--I'm talking about book universe). Cottia's character, while secondary, really spoke to me as a child. She's strong, knows what she wants, won't be talked down to or pushed aside, and Marcus treats her with genuine respect. I love the bond between Esca and Marcus, which is true and deep (and can be easily read on many levels), but Marcus loves Cottia too, and I wish more fan creators would acknowledge that.

I think the movie's erasure of Cottia lends legitimacy to this, so it's understandable; I can't see myself writing fic without at least acknowledging her, but I don't have (much) of a problem reading it. I get a little weirded out by AUs (well, I get weirded out by the AUs in this fandom anyway) which have "Cottia" as e.g. the girlfriend of "Placidus", which to me - well, if you're going to use the name, you should use her role
