Some friends loaned me and my husband the Hornblower miniseries on DVD, so last night we watched the first episode. I have never read the books (or the fic), but because I read the Age of Sail newsletter despatches I knew some of the character names. Which leads me to formulate, um, Redshirt's Law?

In the episode we saw tonight, he begs the Spanish lord who is keeping him prisoner to let him and his men have a boat so they can rescue the survivors of a Spanish ship that has wrecked just offshore, promising his parole - that he won't use this as an escape attempt and will return. Well, they rescue four people, the storm worsens and they hang out by the rocks, then see the English ship that they are originally from and row out to it. Yay! But then....Hornblower informs his captain that he has given his word, so he must return to the prison. And he does. And I was thinking, damn, that is so Fraser of him!
