okay, zipped through the first Rescue me on, and this line made me giggle out loud, because it's so true to the show:

the element of danger because you could never forget that Sheila was completely batfuck crazy.

okay, speed reader here. Finished the second Rescue Me fic, and you're making me want to go out and find more. Geez.

THis line really hit home :

He wants somebody to get out alive. He wants to have saved someone.

Man. That's so Tommy Gavin - it should be the show's motto. Also, I can relate:) Probably TMI, but like I said, you hit a chord.

Very late with the answering comments, as usual--but thank you. THis was the hardest story I wrote last year, I think, but I'm pleased with how it came out. AND the recipient liked it, or seemed to, which I wasn't positive would be the case.

I love the future you imagine for Jerrott. I love the quality of writing, but then you never disappoint there.

It leaves me wondering why Francis bothered to write after all that time. Affection? Mischief? Some political end?

And this

There is no more peace in Scotland than there was on the edge of the Ottoman Empire: the country is split between two Gods, two faiths, and square in the middle of it stands Richard Crawford and his brother Crawford of Lymond.

is exactly the sort of glorious, dramatic, poetical turn of phrase that made me fall in love with the original. How perfectly you've replicated the sentiment and the power, but in a way that still sounds just like you.

Francis, with only one motive? Let's assume it was something complicated, well-meant and cruel at the same time. Thank you very much for the compliment--this was written rather at the last minute, so it didn't get quite as developed as I would like. Someday I'd like to go back and research it properly. The things Google pulled up on the Knights of St John make it worthwhile on its own :)

Congratulations for writing a Jerrott I recognise from Lady Dunnett's remarkable books, with a future I can believe, easily, with sadness. Poor Jerott. I am glad, really, he burned those letters. Lymond is never going to be for Jerrott the man he wants and needs, though it pains me to admit. I have never had any doubt Jerrott loves Francis Crawford in every way. I hope he finds some kind of peace in his life, those boys he uses to take the edge off his need. Jerrott deserves a little happiness. He is right, though, Marthe would indeed laugh.
