Looking for recs

Because it's too hot to go outside and ride my horses! So please, point me to long, dark, plotty stuff I haven't read, especially PotC, HL, Alias and original stuff. Or at least point me to books to order! What have you read and loved, that I might not have read?

On Stranger Tides, by Tim Powers. Pirates, pirates, pirates! (And my all-time favorite book.)

I think I read and really liked something of Tim Powers' once--I remember it had Byron and vampires in it--an awesome combination. I'll definitely check this one out, thanks.

I recently read, from crack_van, Mardi Gras by abundantlyqueer. It's nominally LotR RPS, but as I know nothing about the people concerned I read it as original. Um...sultry.

If you haven't read it already, I think Chartreuse's The God Eaters (which IS original fiction) may be to your taste as well. And it's long!

Really, you would not regret investing some time in fabularasa's Jack/Norrington "Counting". It's not exactly long, but it is substantial. Don't have the link handy. It's a very recent entry on her LJ.

Have you read Susannah Clarke's "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell" yet? Not new, but I highly recommend for complete dedication to an original and bold idea, and for fantastic character work.

I really enjoyed Counting. It's given me an idea for a story I should probably never ever write, but--we'll see.

I'm on an entirely different continent, but it's too damn hot here, as well.

I've only read one POTC fic, here: http://pogrebin.livejournal.com/18271.html
