the last guy in line says the color of which color of hat is more prevalent: black or white, then every one calls that color until it gets to a point in the line where the other color is more prevalent, at that point, that person calls that color. and so on.

you're close in concept.. but the percentage of people you can save with that is not optimal

The last person yells out the color of the next person, he may or may not be eaten depending on the color of his hat, then the next person will yell out the color that the last person yelled, so he will be saved; the next person will yell out the color of the person ahead of him, he may or may not be eaten, but the next person will be saved and you keep going until the end of the line; that means that at worst at least half of them will be saved

the percentage saved in your method would be 75% (50% of all + 50% of the rest).. however that is still not the optimal answer

good. i'm about ready to give an expensive private school (mount st mary's in LA) all of my money, and i'm very excited about it. haha

i don't know... how can someone not know the color of his own hat? they must be like yarmulkes.
i found the answer to a similar problem because i am sleazy like that.
