We opted for a townhouse, 3 levels. It suits us well, and the whole downstairs could be converted for a roommate if it ever came to it.

for what it's worth, my advice is to always buy based on neighborhood and lifestlye choices (want to walk, drive, or bike? Shop local or at malls? etc.), rather than on ideal home. We've done it both ways, and are sooooo much happier in the place we bought based on the neighborhood. The in-law apt sounds like a great idea.

Well, for here, the west end is ridiculously not affordable, IMHO, and comes with an excess of traffic that rivals NoVA. That was part of why we looked on the south side, but it did take a year of really looking to find our house.

See, I WANT to live out in the boonies. In addition to having better schools and less crime, it appeals to me to want to get away from the sprawl of people living closely together. 'Give me land, lots of land under starry skies above.....' ...what, am I the one one that grew up listening to Cowboy music?? ;-)

Zoning may make it impossible to advertise something as having a MiL apartment... but they still may have such.

Good luck!
