Well, that was insulting

I woke up this morning to the news of McCain's VP pick. "Who???" My second thought was, "I have no idea who this is, but that was well-played. The Dems might be screwed ( Read more... )

I've been following news stories all day. The more I read, the more upset I get.

Ditto on pretty much everything. I was pissed off by McCain's shallow, gimmicky VP choice. *As if* she's any kind of qualified, & nobody should even speak her name in the same breath as Hillary Clinton (who has worked tirelessly for women's & children's rights as a lawyer & elected official for decades). Pathetic political ploy on McCain's part.

A slight aside, I don't think there's much wrong with "only" having a BA degree in Journalism for any public official. Heck, I wouldn't be opposed to a candidate who never went to college (in some ways, college is a classist experience in this country). Imo, it's the sum of life experiences & contributions that matter. She was a beauty queen, a weather girl, & then got into the PTA before becoming mayor & governor. Not the most relevant background for a VP.

My take on the degree is that, yes, in general, people shouldn't necessarily be judged based upon their educational background, but on their experiences. However, in the cases POTUS and VPOTUS, I do want some sort of relevant education which shows that you have some understanding of how the federal government works. For these positions, education is a Big Deal to me.

I dunno, Jimmy Carter graduated from the Naval Academy (quite a few presidents have had military educations), & I don't think that automatically gave him (or any of them) an understanding of how govt. works -- just how the military works. Carter, specifically, had a scientific degree. And in the presidential campaign, he was painted as a dumb peanut farmer (tho' imo, he's the most intelligent president of my lifetime).

I'm just saying that's not the biggest deal for any candidate. And esp. not Palin -- she has so many clear faults, a lack of graduate education or specific poli-sci degree seems niggling.

Dan Quayle, you may stand up now, someone will now take over your seat.

I think she may well be scarier than Quayle. I tend to liken her more to Harriet Miers.
