Wolves

While I was on vacation in Vermont, I finally finished a book I've been reading for a while: "How to Cook a Wolf" by MFK Fisher.  Fisher wrote it in 1942, right as the US was coming out of depression and into a world war; my edition includes annotations she wrote in 1951, when she revised the text for a new edition. In my edition, these ( Read more... )

I don't think writing about food is frivolous, and I do write about a lot of frivolous things. But I'm flattered by the comparison to MFK Fisher. It's true I don't cook much (so my kitchen is just the right size!) But I do eat well. Last night I made roasted asparagus in prosciutto and ate it with some bread, cheese, cornichons and an orange. Well, I didn't say I couldn't imagine you cooking, only that I couldn't imagine you cooking for a dinner party there.

I really don't know how to raise a kid to enjoy lots of different kinds of food -- whether your mother was correct or I am in philosophy regarding kids and food. I see the rationale for 3 bites of everything. I do know that at this point my kid would gag and throw up if I tried to make him eat 3 bites -- getting him to lick something is often an achievement. And I know I could outlast my mother when I was a kid -- pretty much because I was completely ready to go to bed hungry if need be, and she didn't want me to do that.

I have to show you my Vincent Price cookbook sometime -- yes, that Vincent Price.
